With the most famous European summer hotspots charging $350/night for basic rooms and requiring timed-entry tickets just to walk down a street, my partner and I started booking exclusively shoulder-season trips (May/June and September/October) to secondary regions.
Three places that completely blew us away this year for half the cost:
1. São Miguel & Flores (The Azores, Portugal): Volcanic crater lakes (Sete Cidades and Lagoa do Fogo), natural thermal hot springs in the rainforest (Furnas), dramatic Atlantic cliffs, zero mass-tourism resorts, and incredible local steak and seafood for €18.
2. Lake Bohinj & Soča Valley (Slovenia): Just 25 minutes past Lake Bled, Lake Bohinj and the emerald Soča River offer Julian Alps scenery that rivals Switzerland at a fraction of the price.
3. Mani Peninsula & Monemvasia (Southern Peloponnese, Greece): Stone tower villages, turquoise coves with crystal-clear water in late September, and family-run tavernas where you eat right on the water.

Lake Bohinj over Lake Bled is the best travel advice in Europe. Taking the cable car up to Mount Vogel in late September when the larches turn gold—and then swimming in the crystal-clear lake below—is unforgettable.
If you go to São Miguel (Azores), rent a small car early and stop by Caldeira Velha and Terra Nostra Park in Furnas on a misty morning. Also try the *Cozido das Furnas* slow-cooked underground by volcanic steam!
