Ever wondered why a 65-inch 4K Smart TV costs less than a 32-inch "dumb" computer monitor? Because modern Smart TVs subsidize their hardware by running Automatic Content Recognition (ACR) in the background.
Even when you aren't using the built-in TV apps—for example, when you plug in a PC, PlayStation, or Apple TV via HDMI—most Smart TVs take pixel samples/fingerprints of the screen several times per second and phone home to ad-tech servers:
1. Step 1: Disable ACR Hidden in the TV Menus:
- LG webOS: *Settings -> General -> System -> Additional Settings -> Live Plus (Turn OFF)* + *Advertisement -> Limit Ad Tracking*.
- Samsung Tizen: *Settings -> Terms & Privacy -> Privacy Choices -> Viewing Information Services (Turn OFF)*.
- Sony / Google TV: *Settings -> Privacy -> Samba Interactive TV (Turn OFF)*.
2. Step 2: Never Connect the TV Itself to Wi-Fi (or Sinkhole It via DNS):
- The cleanest fix is keeping the TV completely disconnected from your Wi-Fi/Ethernet and using an external Apple TV 4K or mini-PC/Linux HTPC on HDMI.
- If you do connect the TV, run Pi-hole or AdGuard Home on your router/Raspberry Pi and enable the *Smart-TV Blocklist* (hblock / Perflyst SmartTV list)—my Samsung TV alone tried to ping ads.samsung.com and acr0.samsungcloudsolution.com14,200 times in 24 hours before I blocked it.

14,200 DNS queries a day from a television is wild. When I checked my AdGuard Home logs, my LG OLED and Roku stick were the #1 and #2 chattiest devices on my entire home network—even at 3 AM when the screen was turned off!
Keeping the Smart TV 100% offline (never entering the Wi-Fi password during initial setup) has another huge benefit: the manufacturer can never push a forced firmware update that slows down the UI or injects full-screen banner ads onto your home screen.
