Cloud API subscriptions are great until you need to analyze sensitive proprietary codebases, financial PDFs, or legal contracts that cannot leave your local LAN.
Here is what I am currently benchmarking at home with 100% offline zero-telemetry inference using Ollama + Open WebUI:
- For Coding & Refactoring (16GB–24GB VRAM): Qwen-2.5-Coder-32B-Instruct (Q4_K_M) on a used RTX 3090 (24GB) hits ~42 tokens/sec and rivals frontier cloud models on Python, TypeScript, PHP, and SQL.
- For Deep Reasoning & Math: DeepSeek-R1-Distill-Qwen-32B (Q4_K_M) or the 14B variant on a 16GB RTX 4070 Ti Super.
- For High-Memory Unified RAM (Mac Mini M4 Pro 48GB / 64GB): Draws only ~45 Watts under full load and can hold Llama-3.3-70B (Q4_K_M) entirely in memory with a 32k context window.
What local models and quantization levels are you running as your daily driver?

The Mac Mini M4 Pro (48GB unified memory) is hands-down the best watts-per-dollar home AI server right now. It sits silently on a bookshelf, idles at 4W, and serves Qwen-2.5-Coder-32B and DeepSeek-R1-32B to my whole home network via Tailscale.
If speed is your priority, a dual RTX 3090 (48GB total VRAM via NVLink/PCIe) running vLLM or TabbyAPI (EXL2 quantization) still crushes Apple Silicon on prompt-processing (time-to-first-token) when feeding 20,000+ token code files.
Pro tip: pair Open WebUI with local SearXNG in Docker. That gives your local DeepSeek-R1 or Qwen live web search capabilities without leaking your identity or search history to any big-tech AI provider.
